Ecological risks and potential sources of heavy metals in agricultural soils from Huanghuai Plain, China

Abstract: A total of 224 agricultural soil samples from Huanghuai Plain in China were investigated for the concentrations of seven heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn). The mean concentrations of the metals were 12, 0.17, 79, 0.04, 35, 25, and 74 mg/kg, respectively. These values are similar or slightly higher than background values in this region, except for Cd with a mean nearly twice the background value. The estimated ecological risks based on contamination factors and potential ecological risk indexes are … Show more

“…Correlations among different heavy metals can be used to explain their spatial distributions and sources in soils (Navas and Machín, 2002;Zhou et al, 2014). The correlations among different soil heavy metals (Table 4) indicate a common source of Cr, Ni, Zn, and Pb and a separate source of Cu in the Laozhai watershed.…”

“…The Hakanson potential ecological risk index (RI) was used widely for a comprehensive assessment of the harmful effects of heavy metals in soil (Qu et al 2014;Yuan et al 2014;Zhou et al 2014). The risk index was calculated using the following equation (Hakanson 1980):…”

“…S1). The differences of E r i between Hg and the other metals mainly resulted from their toxic response factors (T r i ) and abnormally high concentration at a few sampling sites (Zhou et al 2014). Therefore, RI reflects the risk of high toxic metals that are released by industrial activities in this region.…”

“…PCA is a datareduction procedure which aims at providing a simple visualization of the relationships between variables for large or complex datasets (Lawless and Heymann 2010). Many studies have used this method for analyzing the possible sources of heavy metals (e.g., Zhou et al 2014). Similarly, it was applied in this research to convert a set of possibly correlated heavy metals into a set of values for linearly uncorrelated variables (principal components or PCs) in order to explore the grouping of metals according to their similarities (Jolliffe 2005;Abdi and Williams 2010;Shan et al 2013).…”
