Since 2016, the Thai Government has pursued a twenty-year national economic growth policy, Thailand 4.0, promoting innovation and stimulating international investment through the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) project. The EEC project involves significant land acquisition resulting in the need to relocate villagers with potential impact on food security in a major food production area. This research explored the concerns of a local farming community regarding the potential loss of their farmland and means of livelihood under the EEC project using a case study in Ban Pho District of Chachoengsao (CCS) province. It described their resulting action to protect their farmland using community organizing. Data was collected through documents, observation and semi-structured interviews of key stakeholders. The results demonstrate the role of social capital in community organizing. We contend that high social capital stock is a necessary precursor to create conditions for community members to take steps to defend and protect their interests. This paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of social capital in community organizing in cases involving natural resource management.

Mangroves can be considered as biogeochemical reactors along (sub)tropical coastlines, acting both as sinks or sources for trace metals depending on environmental factors. In this study, we characterized the role of a mangrove estuary, developing downstream a densely populated megacity (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam), on the fate and partitioning of trace metals. Surface water and suspended particulate matter were collected at four sites along the estuarine salinity gradient during 24 h cycling in dry and rainy seasons. Salinity, pH, DO, TSS, POC, DOC, dissolved and particulate Fe, Mn, Cr, As, Cu, Ni, Co and Pb were measured. TSS was the main trace metals carrier during their transit in the estuary. However, TSS variations did not explain the whole variability of metals distribution. Mn, Cr and As were highly reactive metals while the other metals (Fe, Ni, Cu, Co and Pb) presented stable log K values along the estuary. Organic matter dynamic appeared to play a key role in metals fractioning. Its decomposition during water transit in the estuary induced metal desorption, especially for Cr and As. Conversely, dissolved Mn concentrations decreased along the estuary, which was suggested to result from Mn oxidative precipitation onto solid phase due to oxidation and pH changes. Extra sources as pore-water release, runoff from adjacent soils, or aquaculture effluents were suggested to be involved in trace metal dynamic in this estuary. In addition, the monsoon increased metal loads, notably dissolved and particulate Fe, Cr, Ni and Pb.

a b s t r a c tIt has great a subjective influence on the evaluation of major heavy metal pollution factors in coastal waters and sediments by using the traditional Nemerow exponential method, without considering the harmful differences of different heavy metals, and resulting in a low accuracy of the evaluation results. In this paper, a new model to evaluate the major heavy metal pollution factors in coastal waters and sediments is established, to calculate the single pollution index and potential ecological risk index of heavy metals. On this basis, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is used to construct the main heavy metal pollution factor model of coastal waters and sediments. The heavy metal pollution factor is reasonably evaluated and the risk grade of heavy metal pollution factor in coastal waters and sediments is obtained. The results of sampling analysis show that the evaluation results obtained by the model are as follows: the pollution index of heavy metals in the coastal water with the order of Pb > Cu > Hg > As > Cd > Zn; the potential ecological risk index of heavy metals in sediments is Pb > Cu > As > Zn > Hg > Cd. The pollution degree of area C is the highest, area A is the second, and area B is the smallest. The results show that the model can accurately evaluate the main heavy metal pollution factors in coastal waters and sediments.
