Ecological niches of three teuthophageous odontocetes in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: Abstract. In the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, sperm whales, pilot whales and Risso's dolphins prey exclusively or preferentially on cephalopods. In order to evaluate their competition, we modelled their habitat suitability with the Ecological Niche Factor Analysis (ENFA) and compared their ecological niches using a discriminant analysis. We used a long term (1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005) small boat data set, with visual and acoustic (sperm whale) detections. Risso's dolph… Show more

“…Mean values flanked by different letters (a, b and ab for differences in 2 species out of 3, and a, b and c for dissimilarities between all 3 species) indicate significant differences in post hoc Tukey tests (p-value < 0.05). on the whole slope and surrounding oceanic water (mean depth around 1800 m) (Praca et al, 2009;Praca and Gannier, 2008). These findings may indicate that d…”

“…This result could highlight a possible superposition in their habitat over a long-term period. However, habitat models in the NWMS showed spatial segregation between the three species in summer (Praca et al, 2009;Praca and Gannier, 2008). While Risso's dolphin seems to prefer the upper part of the slope (mean depth around 650 m), the pilot whale presents the most oceanic habitat at 2500 m mean depth (Praca and Gannier, 2008).…”

“…chlorophyll a surface concentration) have been successfully employed to describe cetacean habitat preference indirectly (e.g. Cañadas et al 2002, Davis et al 2002, Hamazaki 2002, Yen et al 2004, Cañadas et al 2005, Ferguson et al 2006, Panigada et al 2008, Praca & Gannier 2008. There are however disadvantages of using such proxy measures.…”
