Ecological momentary assessment of mood and movement with bipolar disorder over time: Participant recruitment and efficacy of study methods

Abstract: Objectives: Mobile technology and ambulatory research tools enable the study of human experience in vivo, when and where it occurs. This includes cognitive processes that cannot be directly measured or observed (e.g., emotion) but can be reported in the moment when prompted. Methods: For the Bipolar Affective Disorder and older Adults (BADAS) Study, 50 participants were randomly prompted twice daily to complete brief smartphone questionnaires. This included the Bipolar Disorder Symptom Scale which was developed… Show more

“…Most (n=89, 87.3%) of the 102 participants previously took part in the Bipolar Affective Disorders and Older Adults (BADAS) study [41]; the remainder were recruited specifically for this study. Subsamples did not differ in age (t 100 =1.64; P=.10), gender (χ 2 2 =0.2; P=.90), socioeconomic status (χ 2 6 =9.9; P=.13), or country of residence (χ 2 3 =6.0; P=.11).…”

“…While methods of monitoring mood are being investigated which involve the use of smart phones, actigraphs and other wearable devices (Ecological Momentary Assessment—EMA) [ 7 ], the relationship between these new technologies and mood as rated by clinician-administered rating scales is not yet clear [ 8 ]. Furthermore, EMA involves a significant time burden for patients (for example 6.5 h total, on average, over 145 days [ 9 ]) and some patients may find this intrusive.…”
