Ecological Momentary Assessment

Abstract: Assessment in clinical psychology typically relies on global retrospective self-reports collected at research or clinic visits, which are limited by recall bias and are not well suited to address how behavior changes over time and across contexts. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) involves repeated sampling of subjects' current behaviors and experiences in real time, in subjects' natural environments. EMA aims to minimize recall bias, maximize ecological validity, and allow study of microprocesses that inf… Show more

“…Combining rigorous trial designs where app-usage data is continuously collected (logins, duration of usage, duration at certain elements, etc.) with, for example, ecological momentary assessment (Shiffman, Stone, & Hufford, 2008), in which data on symptoms/distress are collected with high frequency, could yield more detailed information about the potential mechanisms of change related to app usage.…”

“…Finally, there are reciprocal relationships between impaired daily function from mTBI, mood changes, chronic pain, and disrupted sleep at night. Experience sampling or ecological momentary assessments are likely to provide unique insights into the temporal nature of these relationships [135]. Further, each of these conditions amplifies sympathetic activation and exacerbates the other disorders.…”

“…First, we address a call for further investigation of HCC with more elaborate stress assessment strategies, such as ecological momentary assessment . Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is not a single research method, but encompasses a range of methods and methodological traditions (Moskowitz and Young, 2006;Shiffman et al, 2008;Smyth et al, 2009). Shiffman et al (2008) summarised features common to EMA approaches, which help to outline the main advantages: 1) Data are gathered as participants go about their lives (i.e., ecologically valid);…”
