Ecological metabolomics: overview of current developments and future challenges

Abstract: Ecometabolomics, which aims to analyze the metabolome, the total number of metabolites and its shifts in response to environmental changes, is gaining importance in ecological studies because of the increasing use of new technical advances, such as modern HNMR spectrometers and GC-MS coupled to bioinformatic advances. We review here the state of the art and the perspectives of ecometabolomics. The studies available demonstrate ecometabolomic techniques have great sensitivity in detecting the phenotypic mechani… Show more

“…Instead, most studies assess plastic or evolutionary responses to environmental stressors by manipulating abiotic variables in controlled environments (Sardans et al 2011;Colinet et al 2012;Padfield et al 2016). Notable exceptions are the studies on Arabidopsis lyrata that demonstrated distinct metabolic phenotypes along the species' latitudinal distribution, with a typical coldinduced metabolome in the north, indicating adaptation to the local climate (Davey et al 2008), but no difference in metabolic fingerprint between large connected versus marginal fragmented populations (Kunin et al 2009).…”

“…Unfavorable environmental factors such as drought, salinity, chilling, freezing, high temperature etc. significantly limit productivity and quality of crop species worldwide and in extreme cases cause the plant to die (Sardans et al, 2011). Almost all of abiotic stresses are often interconnected and associated with plant-water relations.…”

“…lants are not at all static or easily predictable systems, but are highly dynamic in their chemical composition, which is modulated by environmental factors 1,2 . The phytometabolome is a snapshot of the complete set of metabolites of a plant, representing the metabolic phenotype 2,3 .…”
