Ecological impacts of small hydropower plants on headwater stream fish: from individual to community effects

Abstract: Hydroelectricity is increasingly used worldwide as a source of renewable energy, and many mountain ranges have dozens or hundreds of hydropower plants, with many more being under construction or planned. Although the ecological impacts of large dams are relatively well known, the effects of small hydropower plants and their weirs have been much less investigated. We studied the effects of water diversion of small hydropower plants on fish assemblages in the upper Ter river basin (Catalonia, NE Spain), which ha… Show more

“…dams for flood control) (Almodóvar and Nicola, 1999;González del Tánago et al, 2016). These non-natural flow variations might affect the density, biomass and species composition (Almodóvar and Nicola, 1999;Benejam et al, 2014), as well as affect the daily fish behaviour and the time of spawning and migration periods (Jonsson and Jonsson, 2011). Therefore, it is vital to improve our understanding of the migratory patterns of the different populations and of the potential impact of environmental disturbances, especially in those less studied and more threatened populations, such as the Iberian populations (Clavero et al, 2004).…”

“…The regulatory framework (national Atlantic salmon rivers, WFD and revisions) and implemented mitigation measures resulted in low scores along the development axis. Increased hydropeaking caused by rapid increase or decrease in water discharge in accordance with fluctuations in the power demand (Harby and Noack, 2013), cumulative effects of small hydropower projects in tributaries (Benejam et al, 2016) and the increasing demand for renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions (e.g. the EU Renewable Energy Directive, EU, 2009) add uncertainty to future development.…”
