Ecological effects and perceptions of victims of pipeline explosion in a developing country

Abstract: Petroleum pipeline network is a critical infrastructure that should be protected because of its importance and the danger of fire disaster and ecosystem disruption if unprotected. However, the procedure for the management of the pipeline in Nigeria is probably faulty, and we think that this accounts for the multiple occurrences of pipeline fires in Nigeria between 1998 and 2007. Our study involves the use of satellite imageries, ecological sampling, questionnaire and personal interaction with some of the victi… Show more

“…These images were subsequently subjected to digital image processing (DIP) in ERDAS Imagine 2014 and ArcGIS Pro software; and the bands stacked. In layer stacking, the extracted individual bands for each Landsat scene were stacked into a single multispectral scene and a subset of the Area of Interest (AOI) extracted [28]. This was clipped to the administrative boundary shape file (.shp) of the Basque Country for analysis.…”

“…However, even seemingly mundane conditions, such as heavy rain, can result in petrochemical pipeline explosions due to underground pipeline leakages [7]. Deliberate damage and a lack of monitoring also pose a risk [8].…”
