Ecological drivers of Odonata beta diversity in arid and semi‐arid regions of the Central Plateau of Iran

Abstract: 1. Freshwater habitats are among the most threatened and least studied habitats in arid regions of Iran. Discovering factors responsible for the spatial variation of biodiversity are one of the main considerations in conservation biology. As a first step towards developing conservation strategies, we aimed to investigate the beta diversity and response of Odonata assemblages to climate and landscape variables in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran. 2. A total of 120 water bodies were surveyed. The beta diversit… Show more

“…During the analysis for each area, a GDM with all 152 environmental variables was fitted first. Then only the variables considered important by the first GDM were selected for the second GDM, and the outcomes of the second GDM of each area were the final result focused on here (Eslami et al, 2021). The variables considered important by the second GDM were seen as drivers of bumblebees' biodiversity.…”

“…Previously, climate, land cover and topography were considered as factors of the bumblebee composition (Naeem et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2018;Williams et al, 2015). The effects of habitat heterogeneity and soil on the bumblebee had not been reported, but their effects on other insects were revealed (Eslami et al, 2021;Wang, 2021). To assess environmental factors affecting bumblebees' biodiversity as effectively and comprehensively as possible, all these five environmental factors, including 152 variables in total, were considered in this study.…”

“…Jaccard distance coefficient could reveal the dissimilarity between each pair of patches (islands) based on the presence/absence data of species; thus, the coefficient is a measure of beta diversity (Zhong et al 2021). The Jaccard distance coefficient was calculated as follows (Barzoki et al, 2021):JDgoodbreak=1goodbreak−C/)(Agoodbreak+Bgoodbreak+C.$$ \mathrm{JD}=1-C/\left(A+B+C\right). $$…”
