One specimen of live sharksucker was caught with a bottom trammel net in Taşucu Bay, south-eastern coast of Turkey, at 1 m depth on May, 2021. Meristic parameters were determined by fin ray counts and metric parameters were measured from the photos of the specimen. Excluding the recent record in Antalya Gulf, previous records of this species occurred later than May, generally in July in the Mediterranean Sea as well as in the Aegean Sea. The biometrical measurements were different in Taşucu Bay compared to those caught from the Aegean Sea and the central Mediterranean Sea (Tunisian and Sicilian waters), but relatively similar to those reported from Croatia. Major discriminative variables, albeit less significant in individuals from the central Mediterranean, were the number of anal, pectoral and dorsal fin rays. Numbers of suction disc laminae were higher in individuals from the central Mediterranean Sea and New Zealand than those from the Turkish coasts (all 21 disc laminae). The statistical analyses (Principal Component and Discriminant analyses) affirmed successful use of meristic parameters to differentiate the biometric characteristics of the species from the Aegean Sea, the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea. The length-weight relationship showed that the species had a negative allometric growth.

Por's goatfish, similarly to what has already occurred off the coast of the Middle East (Ismen 2006;De Meo et al 2017), has become a new fishery resource for local fishing fleets. However, any economic benefits produced will depend on how this species impacts the indigenous species, in particular its potential competitors, namely the autochthonous goatfish M. barbatus and M. surmuletus.…”

One hundred and six specimens of the Por's goatfish, Upeneus pori Ben-Tuvia & Golani (1989), a Lessepsian species native to the Western Indian Ocean, were collected from bottom trawlers' catches from 2012 to 2016 on the deep shelf off the southern coast of Lampedusa Island (Strait of Sicily, Central Mediterranean Sea). Since it first appeared in Iskenderun Bay (Turkey) in 1950, the Por's goatfish has quickly spread in Levantine Sea waters to become a commercial species used by local fisheries, while continuing its range expansion along the southeastern coasts of the Mediterranean. Because the Strait of Sicily currently represents the westernmost sector of this species distribution area, it might serve as a stepping-stone for this species' expansion in the western basin of the Mediterranean. Supporting this hypothesis was our finding of specimens with post-spawning gonads. The pattern of westward expansion by the Por's goatfish in the Mediterranean Sea and its settlement in the Strait of Sicily are discussed in relation to the warming trend over the last 30 years.

Pufferfish represent a serious threat to the marine ecosystem in the Mediterranean Sea. To better understand the population dynamics of pufferfish and their relation with ecological parameters, six pufferfish species were studied in two fishing and one non-fishing zone in one of the most oligotrophic regions of the Mediterranean Sea during 2014 and 2015, including different habitats of vegetated and non-vegetated and seasons. The results provide information on pufferfish ecological status compared with more eutrophic zones in which these species could potentially worsen their impact. Four species were common in the study area and two were rare. The dominant species was Lagocephalus suezensis, reaching abundances of 11,000 ind/km2 at 25 m in October, followed by Lagocephalus sceleratus, Lagocephalus guentheri, and Torquigener flavimaculosus. The rarest species, Tylerius spinosissimus and Sphoeroides pachygaster, reached higher abundance and biomass in October and February than the other sampling months. The riverine and meadow habitats played a crucial role for nursing and reproduction in the population dynamics of Lagocephalus species, while T. flavimaculosus was absent in these areas. Sex ratios changed depending on season and location. The occurrence of larger individuals of Lagocephalus spp. and T. flavimaculosus at greater depths evidenced an ontogenetic migration. Overall, length-weight (L-W) relationships indicate isometric growth for each of the species studied. Pufferfish populations were primarily a function of habitat and depth of seafloor and secondarily with water productivity.
