Abstract:We critically analyzed a set of ecological models that are used to assess the impact of hydropower dams on water quality and habitat suitability for biological communities. After a literature search, we developed an integrated conceptual model that illustrates the linkages between the main input variables, model approaches, the output variables and biotic-abiotic interactions in the ecosystems related to hydropower dams. We found that variations in water flow and water depth coupled with increased nutrient availability are major variables that contribute to structural and functional ecosystem changes. We also found that ecological models are an important tool to assess the impact of hydropower dams. For instance, model simulation of different scenarios (e.g., with and without the dam, different operation methods) can analyze and predict the related ecosystem shifts. However, one of the remaining shortcomings of these models is the limited capacity to separate dam-related impacts from other anthropogenic influences (e.g., agriculture, urbanization). Moreover, collecting sufficient high-quality data to increase the statistical power remains a challenge. The severely altered conditions (e.g., generation of very deep lakes) also lead to difficulties for standardized data collection. We see future opportunities in the integration of models to improve the understanding of the different processes affected by hydropower dam development and operation, as well as the use of remote sensing methods for data collection.

A 3-species food web model is analysed, with stochastic variation in parameters. Noise affects either resource growth or consumer intake as a Gaussian function. Noise variance, colour, and the consumers foraging adaptation rate is varied. Environmental characteristics impact on the consumer-resource interaction strength. Noise impact on population variability depends on where it hits in the food web. a r t i c l e i n f o t r a c tThe physiological performance and behaviour of organisms are contingent on environmental conditions. When these conditions vary over time, this can have important consequences for the dynamics of individual populations and entire species communities. While the importance of environmental variation on the structuring and stability of natural food webs is recognised, little work has been done so far to build up a theoretical understanding of these processes. Here we investigate a simple model food web, where a consumer species forages flexibly upon two distinct, inter-competing resource species. Resource productivities or the resource intake rates by the consumer are assumed to depend on environmental conditions in a realistic manner. Fluctuations in these parameters drive variation in the strength of consumer-resource interactions, depending on whether the resource or the consumer is sensitive to environmental noise. The way resources and the consumer respond to changes in environmental conditions stems from the deterministic influence of each stochastic parameter on food web dynamics, which interact with the consumer adaptation process as well as between-resource competition. According to recent empirical reports, the mechanisms behind our results are likely to be relevant in natural systems and thus the model predictions are of potential importance in understanding food web responses to environmental stochasticity in general.

The Skellam model describes discrete‐time population dynamics of a single species assuming uniform (i.e., random or Poissonian) individual distribution and intraspecific contest competition. Apart from studies on individual‐based models derived from first principles it has been rarely applied in ecological research although in specific situations it may be more appropriate than, for instance, the frequently used Ricker model, which is derived assuming scramble competition among the individuals. In this article, we offer an insight into the first principles underlying the Skellam model and provide an alternative parameterization of the model in terms of two commonly used parameters: intrinsic rate of population increase and carrying capacity. We also provide guidelines and software for fitting the Skellam model to discrete population time series data. In light of these findings, the Skellam model may be a useful alternative for a range of purposes where it has been earlier overlooked.
