Ecologia Trófica De Peixes De Riacho: Uma Releitura 20 Anos Depois

Abstract: The great extent and diversity of ecological conditions of stream ecosystems in Brazil are widely recognized. In the last two decades, studies on stream fishes have contributed to the knowledge about their trophic ecology. However, the large amount of available information is yet fragmented. This chapter presents the state of the art of studies about feeding and trophic ecology of stream fishes in Brazil, an essential topic to understand ecosystem functioning. The review presented here was based on searches on… Show more

“…Feeding habits can be related to the morphology of the mouth, limiting food items that can be consumed (Esteves et al, 2021). Hoplosternum littorale has a sub-inferior mouth and a body covered by bone plates that are ventrally flattened (Hahn, Almeida, & Luz, 1997).…”

“…Considering the wide distribution of H. littorale, its feeding habits, its opportunistic character, and since the feeding behavior of fish can change according to its environment, studies that evaluate diets are relevant for understanding the relationships between species and habitats (Esteves, Aranha, & Albrecht, 2021). Furthermore, knowledge on the biological aspects of native species is fundamental for understanding the trophic dynamics in their natural aquatic environments (Santos, Oliveira, & Moralles, 2009).…”

“…In recent years, scientists and environmental managers have recognized ichthyic communities as an integrating index of a complex set of physical and biological conditions of water bodies, that is, fish are indicators of the biotic integrity of lakes, reservoirs, streams, rivers, streams, etc. Research shows that fish exert great control over populations of other organisms, including vegetation, aquatic macroinvertebrates, plankton, and even nutrient cycling and sediment resuspension (Esteves et al 2021).…”
