ECOLOGIA DEL COTO MONO (Alouatta seniculus, CEBIDAE) EN EL RIO PACAYA, RESERVA NACIONAL PACAYA-SAMIRIA, PERU

Show more

“…Home range sizes of red howler monkeys vary tremendously, but in general are small (10-30 ha) [Defler, 1981;Gaulin and Gaulin, 1982;Soini, 1992;Izawa, 1997;Gómez-Posada et al, 2007]. In LMO, home ranges were smaller than those reported for lowlands and montane continuous forest, and they are similar to home ranges in localities with high densities [Crockett and Eisenberg, 1987;Di Fiore and Campbell, 2006].…”

“…Nevertheless, the reported range of variation is very wide for this species depending on different factors such as type of habitat and resource quality, heterogeneity and seasonality of the forest, competition with other species, disease, isolation and human intervention [Defler, 1981;Crockett and Eisenberg, 1987;Soini, 1992;Di Fiore and Campbell, 2006;Roncancio and Gómez-Posada, 2009]. For the genus Alouatta , high densities in fragments and islands have been reported in several different studies [Estrada and Coates-Estrada, 1996;Estrada et al, 2002;Ferrari et al, 2003, Van Belle andEstrada, 2006;Aguiar et al, 2009;Oklander et al, 2010].…”

“…The data on group composition obtained from the three followed groups included a group containing six males and five female adults. This high number of reproductive individuals of both sexes is not common for the species (Defler 1981;Soini 1992;Chapman and Balcomb 1998). Crockett (1996) argued that the success of subordinate males in beginning a new group might be restricted by the lack of habitat availability to migrate.…”
