This paper proposes a small, transparent, electroactive and highly deformable poly vinyl chloride (PVC) gel-based bending actuator. The effect of the PVC molecular weight and plasticizer content on the performance of the bending actuator is investigated. Three PVCs are prepared with different molecular weights (low molecular weight: PVC L , 116,000; medium molecular weight: PVC M , 239,000; and high molecular weight: PVC H , 282,000) and mixed with plasticizers in various ratios to achieve the best performance of the bending actuator. Experiments are conducted to investigate the bending performance of the actuators based on the prepared PVC gels. Among the prepared actuators, the PVC H -based bending actuator shows the best performance (maximum bending angle: 180 • , elapsed time: 3.15 s).

Soft electroactive materials including dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gels have recently been extensively investigated. These smart materials can effectively respond to an electric field, resulting in shape deformation. In addition to artificial muscles, actuators, sensors, and micro-electromechanical systems, they can be used to prepare various adaptive lenses with unique features such as a simple fabrication, compact structure, good flexibility, and light weight. In contrast to DEAs, PVC gels can provide exciting opportunities for emerging applications in imaging, sensing, optical communication, biomedical engineering, and displays. In this review paper, the underlying physical mechanisms of these two electroactive materials are explained first, and then some recent progress in their application in macro-sized lenses and microlens arrays is presented. Finally, future perspectives of the PVC gels are discussed.

This interferogram was formed by illuminating a deformed surface of PVC gel membrane using a laser beam. This paper by Zuowei Zhou and Hongwen Ren, demonstrated a relatively large dynamic range of electro-responsive surface deformation on a PVC gel membrane. By stimulation using a patterned electric field, the PVC gel membrane appears a surface topography with microlens array (MLA) character, and the deformation can be controlled by adjusting voltage. Both concave and convex MLAs were formed by using different electrode patterns. Moreover, the optical properties of MLAs were precisely characterized by evaluating surface profile.

Abstract: We fabricated an ecofriendly, electroactive, reconfigurable and varifocal PVC–ATBC (ePVC) gel lens. The curvature of the hemispherical plano-convex ePVC gel lens changes with the input voltage. Its focal length increased from 5 to 15 mm upon increasing from 0 to 500 V.
