Rapid urbanization often exerts massive pressure on the resources relied upon by the ecological environment. It is necessary to quickly evaluate the interaction and mutual influence between regional urbanization and the ecological environment. This paper uses the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, integrates MODIS and night light remote sensing data sets, and computes the remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) and the coupling coordination degree (CCD) to measure the coupling coordination and analyze the spatiotemporal changes in the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle (CCEC) for 2010, 2015, and 2020. Our results demonstrate four key findings. Firstly, the CCD varies spatially; it peaks at the Chengdu and the West Chongqing Plains, decreasing outwards along the mountains, with the lowest degree of coupling in the central, southern, and northern edge areas of the CCEC. Additionally, it has shown a trend of maintaining unchanged first and then increasing, mainly responding to policy decisions. Secondly, the changes between the different coupling levels were almost stable and mainly occurred between adjacent levels. Thirdly, the coupling level of towns spreads outwards from the centers at Chengdu and Chongqing and has an overall upward trend in time. Fourthly, in the most recent year, the coupling types present a distribution pattern of one developing axis connected with two peaks. Specifically, the environment system lagging type aggregates in Chengdu, Chongqing, and their surrounding areas, and the others mainly are economic system lagging type. The high internal coupling type also mainly occurs in the high and low coupling levels. Under this context, constructive suggestions for developmental optimization in the study area were proposed.

Opencast coal mine production and construction activities have a certain impact on the ecological environment, while the development and utilization of large coal bases distributed in semi-arid steppe regions may have a more direct and significant impact on the eco-environment. Therefore, in-depth studies of the ecological impacts of human activities and natural environmental elements in opencast coal mines in typical semi-arid steppe regions and analyses of their driving forces are of great significance for protecting and restoring regional fragile steppe ecosystems. In this paper, the mining area southwest of the Shengli coalfield, a typical ore concentration area in eastern Inner Mongolia, was selected as the research object. Its remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) was calculated using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to analyze the eco-environmental quality in the mining area and its surrounding 2 km from 2005 to 2021. The geographically weighted artificial neural network model (GWANN) was combined with the actual situation of mining activity and ecological restoration to discuss the driving factors of eco-environmental quality change in the study area. The results showed that: (1) the proportion of the study area with excellent and good eco-environmental quality increased from 20.96% to 23.93% from 2005 to 2021, and the proportions of areas with other quality grades fluctuated strongly. (2) The change in eco-environmental quality in the interior of the mining area was closely related to the reclamation of dump sites and migration of the mining area. (3) The maximum contribution rate of the mining activity factor to the external eco-environmental quality of the mining area reached 43.33%, with an annual average contribution rate of 34.48%; as the distance from the mining area increased, its contribution gradually decreased. This quantitative analysis of the driving forces of RSEI change in the mining area will complement future work in ecological evaluations of mining areas while also improving the practicality of ecological evaluation at the mining scale, thereby further helping the ecological management of mining areas.

There are obstacles in estimating environmental dynamics behind its convenience, beginning with the development of effective policies for sustainable urban development. The objectives of this research were to comprehend the ability and performance of ecological indices integration and to identify the spatial distribution of changes from 2018 to 2021 in Pekanbaru City, Riau province, Indonesia. This study employed remote sensing data to create ecological parameters including the build-up index, vegetation index, soil index, and moisture index, as well as principal component analysis to generate ecological index integration. The findings indicate a correlation of over 90% among these parameters from 2018 to 2021. Overall, there has been a significant decrease in the ecological quality index’s high-quality categories, such as good and excellent, covering a total of 19.6% over 127 km². Conversely, the poor ecological quality category increased to 2.2%, encompassing an area of 15 km², up from the initial 21.2% covering 122 km². Additionally, the fair and moderate categories also experienced increases of 4% and 13.4%, respectively, reaching 28 km² and 84 km². The study area’s ecological quality is largely affected by increased anthropogenic activities, leading to a drastic decrease in the presence of ecological quality in the good and excellent categories. The importance of spatial planning is emphasized to incorporate aspects of ecological assessment rather than solely focusing on increasing economic activity. This outcome can be used to respond to the concept of sustainable development by caring for the ecological environment, particularly in urban areas, and mitigating ecological damage.
