The authors' estimated prevalence progression for latent RHD (defined variously as worsening of the WHF grade or clinical severity of disease) was 5%/year, while in the fewer studies reporting on the progression of borderline RHD, progression was as low as 2%/year (58). Although these low rates do call into question the use of echocardiography for screening, there is clearly a need for longer term studies of the natural history of latent RHD and for identifying clinical predictors of disease progression.…”
