Echocardiographic Findings in Patients With COVID-19 Pneumonia

Abstract: The aim of this study was to characterize the echocardiographic phenotype of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and its relation to biomarkers. Seventy-four patients (59 AE 13 years old, 78% male) admitted with COVID-19 were included after referral for transthoracic echocardiography as part of routine care. A level 1 British Society of Echocardiography transthoracic echocardiography was used to assess chamber size and function, valvular disease, and likelihood of pulmonary hypertension. The chief abnormalities w… Show more

“…Patients of black race are more likely to have a positive D-dimer than whites in conventional thromboembolic disease [ 9 ]. Given the post-mortem data highlighting the role of diffuse pulmonary small vessel endothelialitis and thrombus formation [ 10 ], together with evidence that injury to the RV (dilatation and dysfunction) is the primary cardiac manifestation of COVID-19 on transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) [ [11] , [12] , [13] , [14] ], further investigation into the influence of ethnicity on the relationship between these biomarkers, echocardiographic findings and outcomes is warranted.…”

“…This finding is consistent with other echocardiographic reports of smaller series recently published. 5 , 6 In particular, about one-third of the patients had the S1Q3T3 pattern, in isolation or associated with a RBBB. Notably the prevalence of RBBB in the general age-matched population is <4%.…”

“…Furthermore, impaired RV function has been demonstrated by either echocardiography or CMR 11,31,32 . RV strain has been recommended to assess the RV function in clinical scenarios with suspected RV dysfunction 33 .…”
