A motile, Gram-negative, pinkish red-pigmented bacterium (strain CC-Hsuan-617 T ) was isolated from an oil-contaminated soil near an oil refinery located in Kaohsiung County, Taiwan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain CC-Hsuan-617T clustered with Algoriphagus mannitolivorans (97.5 % sequence similarity), Algoriphagus aquatilis (98.0 %) and Algoriphagus boritolerans (97.5 %), followed by Algoriphagus ornithinivorans (97.1 %) and Algoriphagus alkaliphilus (97.1 %). The fatty acid profile of the novel strain was slightly different from those reported for recognized Algoriphagus species. The quinone system contained menaquinone MK-7 as the predominant component. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unknown polar lipid, an unknown phospholipid and an unknown aminophospholipid. The main cell polyamine was sym-homospermidine; lesser amounts of spermine and spermidine were also found. The results of DNA-DNA hybridization, and physiological and biochemical tests allowed the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain CC-Hsuan-617 T from recognized Algoriphagus species. A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, gliding, halotolerant, aerobic, light-pink-pigmented bacterium, strain JL3085 T , was isolated from surface water of the South China Sea (16 49¢ 4 † N 112 20¢ 24 † E; temperature: 28.3 C, salinity: 34.5%). The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The polar lipids of strain JL3085T comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, four unidentified phospholipids and three unidentified lipids. Subsequently, the bacterial strain JL3085T was obtained and cultivated in an electrothermal incubator for further study.Here, we describe the morphological, phylogenetic and biochemical characteristics of strain JL3085 T according to the relevant minimal standards (Logan et al., 2009;Tindall et al., 2010). E. vietnamensis DSM 17526T , E. pacifica KCTC 12368T , E. jeungdonensis KCTC 23122 T and 'E. shivajiensis' JCM 17847 were used as reference strains in parallel tests.The cell morphology of strain JL3085T was observed by transmission electron microscopy (H600; Hitachi). Gliding motility was determined as described by Bowman (2000), and an aerobic/anaerobic respiration test was performed using the semi-solid agar puncture method (Dong & Cai, 2001). Tests for the Gram reaction and the presence of poly-b-hydroxybutyrate granules were conducted according to the methods described by Gerhardt et al. The taxonomic status of two novel heterotrophic, Gram-negative, gliding and yellow pigmented bacterial strains was established in this study. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the strains formed a distinct lineage within the genus Maribacter, a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae, with sequence similarities of 96.3-98.5 % to recognized species of the genus Maribacter. The maximum growth temperature of the strains was 35 6C and they required NaCl or seawater for growth. They hydrolysed aesculin and gelatin, reduced nitrates to nitrites and produced acid from carbohydrates. The DNA G+C contents of strains KMM 6025 and KMM 6046T were 36-37 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, it is suggested that the new isolates represent a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter stanieri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6046 T (5KCTC 22023 T 5LMG 22581 T ).
