A 9-year-old female German Shorthaired Pointer weighing 24 kg (52.8 lb) was examined because of signs of depression and weakness the day after dystocia. On physical examination, the dog had signs of depression and was weak and tachypneic (60 breaths/min); there was a greenish and odorless discharge from the vulva. The mucous membranes were pale pink with a capillary refill time of 2 seconds, and the arterial pulse was weak. Cardiac auscultation revealed tachycardia (260 beats/ min), muffled heart sounds, and a soft systolic murmur (grade 2/6) over the mitral area. On palpation of the abdomen, an elastic mass (most likely a retained fetus) was detected in the mid region. Results of a CBC indicated mild anemia (PCV, 35%; reference range, 37% to 57%) and leukocytosis (29,140 cells/µL; reference range, 5,200 to 13,900 cells/µL) with mature neutrophilia (17,120 neutrophils/µL; reference range, 3,900 to 8,000 neutrophils/µL). Serum biochemical analyses revealed mildly high glucose concentration (151 mg/dL; reference range, 77 to 125 mg/dL), mildly high urea concentration (34 mg/dL; reference range, 7 to 27 mg/dL), and high amylase activity (2,191 U/L; reference range, 500 to 1,500 U/L).
