Eccrine Angiomatous Hamartoma: a Rare Skin Lesion with Diverse Histological Features

Abstract: A case of painful eccrine angiomatous hamartoma of the wrist in a 10-year-old girl is presented. It was located in the reticular dermis and contained abnormal tubules resembling eccrine secretory coils and thin vascular channels dispersed in the collagenous tissue of the dermis. Some eccrine ducts showed dilatation. The noteworthy features of this case were the absence of hyperhidrosis over the lesion, and the presence of focal neural infiltration by the tubular structures. Electron microscopy showed mostly cl… Show more

“…Sur rounding stroma is moderately dense and rich in fibro blasts. The hamartomatous nature of this tumor is also documented by the presence of other cutaneous compo nents (pilar, adipose, neural) in close association with the eccrinc-angiomatous complex [18][19][20][21]. In our case we found abnormal hair follicles in one of two lesions histolog ically examined.…”

“…A few cases show a variety of malformations of the ec crine apparatus as reported by Herzberg [5], Pippione et al [10], Hiro.se and Goto [6], Challa and Jona [2], Marsden et al [8], and Abell and Read [1], The eccrine nevus de scribed in this paper is of interest because of its rarity and intrication within the epider mal tissue.…”

“…The malformed structures described in eccrine nevus are various: contortion of the duct [7]; diamond-shaped duct [7]; a branching off of the duct [5]; pseudobasaloid cell nest [10]; adenoid structure [10]; syringomatous picture [6]; the presence of a tubu lar structure inside the nerve sheath [2]; duc tal cell resembling the clear cells lining the eccrine secretory coils [2]; dilated sweat pore [1,8], and hyperplasia of the duct [1,8], Moreover, relying on the occurrence of the adenomatous change in the eccrine duct in our case, one may point out that the ec crine nevus with its malformed eccrine ap paratus is prone to give rise to various types of the eccrine tumors.…”

“…However, specific hormones have not been identified nor suggested. Pain in EAH has been attributed to small infiltrating nerves among the eccrine glands [16,17,18,19,20]. Our patients suffered the same experience, but the causes were unknown.…”
