EBV-associated Burkitt lymphoma in Taiwan is not age-related

Abstract: This study retrospectively investigated 54 cases of sporadic Burkitt lymphoma in Taiwan with histopathology review, immunohistochemistry, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in situ hybridization (EBER) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The great majority revealed typical immunophenotype and 89% (47/53) cases expressed myc protein. EBER was positive in 20% (11/54) of cases, more frequently with nodal presentation, but not significantly associated with age (pediatric vs. adult), abdominal vs. extra-abdominal … Show more

“…BL is composed by mature B-cells positive for CD19, CD20, CD22 and CD79a, also exhibiting immunologic similarity to germinal center cells rather than activated B-cells, being also positive for Bcl-6, CD10 and negative for MUM-1, CD44, CD138 and Bcl-2 1. These findings are compatible with the present case, with the exception of EBV status, since only in geographic regions such as South Asia, Middle Eastern and South America, the EBV-positive BL rates are high (50-80%) 17 , 18…”

“…Adult sBL tends to have higher rates of EBV positivity, nodal presentation, along with poorer outcome, and often more variable pathologic features leading to designations of plasmacytoid or atypical-BL (3). These differences within sBL have raised the suggestion that adult sBL should be considered a separate entity (4) as well as EBV-positive and EBV-negative tumors (5). …”
