Eating Behaviors and Dietary Patterns of Women during Pregnancy: Optimizing the Universal ‘Teachable Moment’

Abstract: Understanding women’s perceptions of eating behaviors and dietary patterns can inform the ‘teachable moment’ model of pregnancy. Our objectives were to describe eating behaviors and dietary patterns in pregnancy. This was a cross-sectional, national electronic survey. Women were ≥18 years of age, living in the United States, currently pregnant or less than two years postpartum, and had internet access. “…80 Other research has found that during pregnancy, making significant changes to diet and lifestyle is challenging. 81 When considering the broader population, the strategies that have been found to have impact on nutritional outcomes are those that include engagement through social media, 82 education with tailored instruction and feedback, 83 and include supplementation and fortification, and cash transfers. 84 While there are some findings from this preliminary research, it has a number of limitations that need to be considered.…”

“…The instrument was structured according to the following domains: (1) physical activity habits during pregnancy, (2) willingness to engage in physical activity during pregnancy, (3) barriers and facilitators to physical activity, (4) respondent demographics, pregnancy status, and anthropometrics, as well as domains outside the scope of the present manuscript, but published elsewhere, (5) eating patterns during pregnancy, and (6) willingness to engage in eating plans during pregnancy. 34,35 Each of the physical activity domains fell in-line with the basics of the FITT principle and highlighted each individual component of frequency, intensity, time, and type.…”

“…Pregnancy is a "teachable moment" in which women are amenable to changing behaviors that can benefit their and their baby's health (Kebbe et al, 2021). Considering the evidence that supervised physical activity interventions decreased GDM risk when started within the first trimester and achieved the recommended level of physical activity (Bennett et al, 2023), evaluating the physical activity of pregnant women at high risk for GDM using ART can redirect the implementation of innovative practices, with the goal of making them more effective and practical in the promotion of humanized care.…”
