Easy come, easy go. Retention of blood donors

Abstract: Retention of blood donors has benefits over recruitment of new blood donors. Retention is defined as preventing donors from lapsing and eventually becoming inactive. This review paper discusses literature on the importance of efforts to retain donors, specifically new donors, since lapsing is most common before the fifth donation. Studies have found that intention to donate, attitudes towards blood donation and self-efficacy (does one feel capable of donating blood) are predictors of blood donation. Feelings o… Show more

“…It is essential to keep a healthy, satisfied, and reliable donor population and is therefore highly prioritized in blood bank settings all over the world. Adverse effects such as dizziness, fatigue, and vasovagal reactions are proven causes of donor deferral and thus, are still of high concern and interest to health care professionals . Studies on adverse effects and how to avoid them have led to the implementation of standard procedures to limit negative side effects of donation worldwide …”

“…Studies show that donors who donated blood for the first time often turn to lapsing donors and donation habits begin at fourth donation levels . It was seen that the most risky group for lapsing donors were young donors, female donors and those living in urban areas . In our analyses, it was seen that the group most at risk for lapsing donors was also young donors.…”

“…In our analyses, it was seen that the group most at risk for lapsing donors was also young donors. The current literature supports that the occurrence of adverse events such as vasovagal reaction and fatigue in first blood donors is important in the loss of donors . Donors, particularly those who give blood for the first time, should be followed carefully for vasovagal reactions, fatigue and stress due to adverse events.…”

“…With over 1.2 million donations per year in Australia, the absolute number of VVR is notable. As most donors who experience a VVR do not return to donate, and the cost of continually attracting new donors comes at a considerable expense . Operationally, it is useful to understand collection centre to collection centre variation on reported VVRs after adjusting for a “donor‐risk” profile.…”
