Easy activation of two C–H bonds of an N-heterocyclic carbene N-methyl group

Abstract: The first trinuclear clusters containing NHC ligands are described; the compound [Ru3(Me2Im)(CO)11](Me2Im=1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) is easily converted into [Ru3(mu-H)2(mu3-MeImCH)(CO)9] by a process involving the activation of two C-H bonds of a methyl group that is an example of degradation of a metal-coordinated NHC ligand under mild conditions.

“…13 This fact indicates that the reaction proceeds through an associative mechanism. The lower tendency of [Os 3 (CO) 12 ] to undergo CO substitution reactions under mild conditions, as compared with that of [Ru 3 (CO) 12 ], is well documented in the chemical literature. 21 The very bulky but very basic NHCs t Bu 2 Im and Ad 2 Im react with [Os 3 (CO) 12 ] upon heating (70 1C, 3 h) to give substituted derivatives with abnormally-coordinated NHCs, i.e., [Os 3 (a-R 2 Im)(CO) 11 ] (R = t Bu (7), Ad (8); Scheme 3).…”

“…The first one is devoted to the NHC chemistry of ruthenium and osmium carbonyl clusters, while the NHC chemistry of other transition metal clusters is collected in the second section. 12,13 Under analogous conditions, the large 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene (Mes 2 Im) reacts more slowly to give a similar monosubstituted derivative (2 in Scheme 2), but the bulkier 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazole-2-ylidene (Dipph 2 Im) fails to give an analogous reaction product. 12 ] at room temperature to give the air-stable orange trinuclear cluster [Ru 3 (Me 2 Im)(CO) 11 ] (1 in Scheme 2).…”
