Eastern Palaearctic Cynipid Inquilines — The Genus Ceroptres Hartig, 1840 with Descriptions of Two New Species (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cynipinae)

Abstract: As part of a study on the inquilinous cynipids belonging to the tribe Synergini (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cynipinae) in the Chinese fauna, we report in the present paper three species of the genus Ceroptres Hartig from that country, including C. masudaiAbe, 1997 and two new species, C. distinctus sp. nov. and C. setosus sp. nov. In addition to detailed descriptions of the new species, we also provide an illustrated key to the species of the genus known from the Palaearctic region and a brief comparison between … Show more

“…It certainly is not unfounded to suggest that the low species diversity of cynipid known from Asia is largely because of lack of studies. In fact, quite a number of new species of cynipids have been reported from eastern Asia including China (Melika et al 2004Tang et al 2009Tang et al , 2011Ide et al 2010;Wang et al 2010Wang et al , 2012Abe et al 2011). Of particular interest are the studies of Ide et al (2010), which described Plagiotrochus masudai associated with Cyclobananopsis, and Melika et al (2011), which described four species of the genus Dryocosmus, including two species associated with Castanopsis and Lithocarpus, respectively.…”

“…In a recent effort of systematic survey of the Eastern Palaearctic cynipid inquilines not belonging to Synergini, especially from mainland China, we came to the conclusion that the recently described Ceroptres setosus and C. distinctus (Wang et al 2012) were erroneously placed based on misinterpretation of key diagnostic features, and that the former should be transferred to the Periclistus while the latter represents a new genus in the tribe Diastrophini. In the present paper, we report the discovery of the new genus, make taxonomic corrections and provide full redescriptions of both Ceroptres setosus and Ceroptres distinctus.…”

“…Although Cyclobalanopsis has a widespread distribution in Asia, the gall-inducing cynipids have been restricted to Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam (Ide et al , 2012(Ide et al , 2013Abe et al 2011;Tang et al 2011a,b;Melika et al 2013;Abe et al 2014). Despite increasingly intensive taxonomic studies being conducted on Mainland China over the past decade (Melika et al 2004;Wang et al 2010Wang et al , 2012Wang et al , 2013Liu et al 2012;Pujade-Villar and Wang 2012;Bernardo et al 2013), no cynipid wasps associated with Cyclobalanopsis have been reported in this region to date.…”
