Estudos com espécies de Dermaptera, como Marava arachidis, atuando sobre insetos-praga contribuem na descoberta de novos agentes para o uso em programas de controle biológico. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os aspectos biológicos de M. arachidis alimentada com Brevicoryne brassicae. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida sob condições controladas de temperatura (25 ± 1 ºC), umidade relativa (70 ± 10%) e fotofase (12 h). Os insetos foram obtidos de criações mantidas em laboratório. No experimento, indivíduos de M. arachidis foram individualizados e alimentados diariamente com B. brassicae. O delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos (1º, 2º, 3º, 4º e 5º ínstares) e 20 repetições, avaliando a sobrevivência ninfal, o número e a duração dos ínstares, dados morfométricos e o número de indivíduos posturados, em resposta a alimentação com B. brassicae. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de significância. A sobrevivência de ninfas e de adultos não foi afetada após a alimentação com B. brassicae. A duração dos ínstares variou de 9 a 15 dias, o peso médio das ninfas de 0,0017 a 0,0112 g, o tamanho corporal de 4,15 a 9,24 e o tamanho da cápsula cefálica aumentou de acordo com o avanço do estágio ninfal. O número de ninfas posturadas foi de 12,2. A alimentação da tesourinha M. arachidis com B. brassicae proporcionou a sua sobrevivência, a sua viabilidade ninfal, o desenvolvimento corporal e a sua reprodução.

The Dermaptera is a polyneopteran order with > 2,000 described species from mainly tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions. More than 310 species of the Dermaptera belonging to nine families have been reported from the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) as a result of the extensive work of Gyanendra Kumar Srivastava. Embracing environmental and climatic heterogeneity, the Indian subcontinent is an intersection of multiple faunal regions and includes several dermapteran groups of special interest. To restart the studies on the Dermaptera of this region, which has been stagnant for a decade, this paper includes a beginner’s guide for collecting and identifying Dermaptera, together with a brief summary of recent advances in their classification and phylogeny.

Two new genera and species of Dermaptera are described from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China: Applanatiforceps angustus gen. et sp. nov. in the archidermapteran family Protodiplatyidae, and Ekpagloderma gracilentum gen et sp. nov. in the eodermapteran family Semenoviolidae. Applanatiforceps shares the typical characters of the extinct suborder Archidermaptera (e.g., pentamerous meta tarsi, filiform and multimerous cerci) and externalized ovipositor. The family identity of the Protodiplatyidae can be further distinguished by comparing this new genus with other genera of the Protodiplatyidae. As a result of its large compound eyes, tegmina without venation, body sparsely setose, legs rather short and slender, and shape of the veinless tegmina, Ekpagloderma is classified in the subfamily Aglyptodermatinae. Ekpagloderma not only has the typical features of the Aglyptodermatinae, but also exhibits a more primitive slender segmented cerci, which is different from all other genera of Eodermaptera. In fact, the diversity of Eodermaptera as known today indicates some of the challenges in understanding the suborder and whether or not it is monophyletic as historically construed, or if the separation of Turanodermaptera is justified.
