Earthquakes near Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1976–1981

Abstract: The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a 66-month-long study of earthquake activity near Albuquerque, New Mexico, during 1976-1981. Analysis of over 1000 hypocenters with magnitudes as large as 3.2 revealed that most of the seismicity fell into three regions: (1) the Socorro and Albuquerque areas of the Rio Grande rift, (2) the Mount Taylor area of the Jemez lineament, and (3) the Estancia basin. In the rift the hypocenters are shallow and largely confined to regions beneath the basins. Composite fault plane sol… Show more

“…A pronounced trend of upper crustal earthquakes along the Jemez lineament [Jaksha and Sanford, 1986] is further evidence for active tectonism there. The composite focal mechanism for these earthquakes [Jaksha and Sanford, 1986] has an axis of extension at about N50øW. The preferred fault plane, with left-lateral, strike-slip faulting, strikes subparallel to the Jemez lineament, with a strike of N78øE.…”

“…The latter result is interpreted as due to magma in the crust along the Jemez lineament [Ander, 1980;Aldrich et al, 1981;Ander et al, 1984]. “…Analysis of one thousand earthquakes revealed that most seismic activity falls into three areas: (1) The Socorro and Albuquerque areas of the Rio Grande Rift, (2) the Mount Taylor area, and (3) the Estancia Basin (Jaksha and Sanford, 1986). This analysis indicates that moderate damage is a reasonable expectation, if an earthquake occurs, but earthquakes are of rare incidence.…”
