With seismic risk assessments becoming more available and reliable over the last years, the need to communicate seismic risk emerged. Seismic risk allows people to understand what impacts earthquakes can have and how they could affect their lives. In Switzerland, a nation-wide seismic risk model (ERM-CH23) was published in 2023 demanding sophisticated communication products to inform about its results. Since only limited research has been conducted on how to best communicate earthquake risk information to societies including the general public, key elements of the outreach activities were tested before the model release. To this end, we, an interdisciplinary group, conducted a nationwide survey in Switzerland in December 2022 to test different earthquake risk map designs by varying the color scale and the legend type. We analyzed the effects of the map and legend design on people's correct interpretation of the risk information, perceived usefulness, risk perception, and motivation to take action. Our survey revealed that (i) a legend with the combination of qualitative and quantitative labels leads to more accurate interpretations of the information presented on the map and is preferred by the public; (ii) the color scale determines how people perceive the spatial risk; and (iii) personal factors influence people's interpretation skills, risk perception, and intention to take action. Our study thus provides insights and recommendations on how to best design user-centered earthquake risk maps as a key outreach product to ensure their effective use by the public, consequently enhancing society's resilience to earthquakes in the long term.

Abstrak: Banyumas merupakan salah satu kabupaten yang berbatasan langusng dengan Gunung Slamet sebagai salah satu gunung api aktif di Pulau Jawa. Oleh karenanya pengetahuan kebencanaan menjadi kebutuhan mutlak bagi seluruh lapisan masyarakat yang berada di daerah rawan bencana termasuk siswa sebagai calon generasi penerus dalam rangka mengurangi resiko dampak dari bencana tersebut. Permasalahan yang dialami mitra yaitu belum terlaksananya pelatihan mitigasi bencana secara rutin dalam menghadapi potensi bencana gunung meletus. Tujuan kegiatan ini yaitu untuk memberikan pengetahuan kebencanaan dan keterampilan warga dalam menghadapi potensi bencana gunung api. Kegiatan pengabdian dilaksanakan di MI Muhammadiyah Gandatapa, Banyumas yang berada di kawasan resiko bencana. Jumlah peserta sebanyak 22 orang. Kegiatan dilaksankan dengan dua tahapan, tahap pertama berupa workshop atau pemaparan dari dua narasumber yang memang mendalami kajian mitigasi. Tahap kedua berupa praktek mitigasi yang diikuti oleh siswa sebagai peserta dalam pelatihan ini. Evaluasi kegiatan berupa pemberian angket setelah kegiatan selesai. Rangkaian kegiatan berjalan baik dan hasil dari pengisian angket peserta dapat disimpulkan bahwa respon peserta kegiatan sangat baik. Ada peningkatan dari pemahaman mitigasi bencana gunung meletus serta pengalaman praktek simulasi yang awalnya hanya 11% dari peserta pernah ikut simulasi menjadi 100%.Abstract: Banyumas is one of the regencies directly adjacent to Mount Slamet, one of the active volcanoes on the island of Java. Therefore disaster knowledge is an absolute necessity for all levels of society who are in disaster-prone areas, including students as candidates for the next generation in order to reduce the risk of the impact of the disaster. The problem experienced by partners is that they have not carried out routine disaster mitigation training in dealing with potential volcanic eruption disasters. Service activities are carried out through disaster mitigation training to provide disaster knowledge for residents of MI Muhammadiyah Gandatapa, Banyumas who are in disaster risk areas. The number of participants was 22 people. The activity was carried out in two stages, the first stage was in the form of a workshop or presentations from two resource persons who really studied mitigation studies. The second stage is in the form of mitigation practices followed by students as participants in this training. Evaluation of activities in the form of giving questionnaires after the activity is complete. The results of filling out the participants' questionnaire can be concluded that the understanding of volcanic eruption disaster mitigation after the participants attended the training was in the good category.
