Earthquake Resistant Design and Rehabilitation of Masonry Historical Structures

Abstract: A general methodology for the earthquake resistant design and rehabilitation of damaged masonry historical structures is presented. The whole process is illustrated through a case study: The rehabilitation of Zoodohos Pigi Holy Temple in Athens; a structure that suffered extensive damage during the September 1999 Athens earthquake. The procedures followed in the design, together with a description of the actions taken for the rehabilitation of the Temple and its strengthening against future earthquake actions,… Show more

“…This differs from conventional buildings. According to Asteris, Tzamtzis, Vouthouni and Sophianopoulos (2005), conventional buildings are normal structure buildings made mainly out of concrete and with the involvement of builders lacking earthquake resistant schematics. The Rakyat Post (2015) reports that most buildings in Malaysia are not designed to withstand the impact of earthquakes, resulting in major destruction to the buildings in the event of a high impact magnitude earthquake.…”

“…values between 17-25 mm 3 /g.s 1/2 , and are therefore compatible with the original brisk elements of the historical masonry [9]. Fragility analysis was conducted for the case of the Catholicon of the Kaisariani monastery, for different repairing scenarios, in accordance to the analysis of the selected restoration mortars [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36]. The entry values selected for the original materials was an average values of 12 MPa compressive strength for the building stones, taking available literature into account, and 1 MPa for the original mortars, as correlated through the analysis of the physic-chemical properties [20].…”

“…Vrijedne se informacije mogu dobiti određivanjem odnosa između sile i deformacije. Od primarnog su značenja vrijednosti tlačne i vlačne čvrstoće, modula elastičnosti, Poissonovog koeficijenta i jedinične težine materijala [10]. U tom su smislu obavljena ispitivanja morta i ziđa, a u svrhu dobivanja početnih podatka za definiranje ponašanja i mehaničkih svojstava ziđa Palače Beylerbeyi.…”
