Earth's lithospheric magnetic field determined to spherical harmonic degree 90 from CHAMP satellite measurements

Abstract: S U M M A R YThe CHAMP magnetic field mission is providing highly reliable measurements from which the global lithospheric magnetic field can be determined in unprecedented resolution and accuracy. Using almost 5 yr of data, we derive our fourth generation lithospheric field model termed MF4, which is expanded to spherical harmonic degree and order 90. After subtracting from the full magnetic field observations predicted fields from an internal field model up to degree 15, an external field model up to degree … Show more

“…This model includes the main field, the field of the ring current, largescale magnetospheric fields, and the crustal anomalies up to spherical harmonic degree/order 90 (Maus et al, 2006). In particular, the removal of the last term was shown to be important for pulsation studies (Sutcliffe and Lühr, 2003;Vellante et al, 2004).…”

“…Vector data recorded in the sensor system were transformed into a mean field-aligned (MFA) coordinate system. The mean field was estimated by the CHAMP based field model POMME 4.1s (Potsdam Magnetic Model of the Earth) developed by Maus et al (2006). This model includes the main field, the crustal anomalies up to spherical harmonic degree/order 90, the field of the ring current, and large-scale magnetospheric fields.…”

“…Let us note that the existence of a large scale contiguous negative-positive high intensity geomagnetic anomaly pattern along the Java trench has been reported in several occasions. Figure 1 shows the total component of the magnetic anomaly over Indonesian region using the magnetic field model MF5 (Maus, et al 2006) at 5 km altitude. Figure 2 shows a more detailed magnetic anomaly map over the islands along the Java Trench, including the Lombok Island.…”
