PERFORMANSI ALAT PENUKAR KALOR UDARA-TANAH YANG MENGGUNAKAN SIKLUS TERBUKA DI KOTA MEDANThe purpose of this study was to obtain the performance of an EAHE (earth air heat exchanger) with weather conditions in the Medan city. The research method carried out was experimental in the field for several days with varying weather conditions. The air conditioning system using an Air-Earth Heat exchanger has tested its performance by comparing the experimental results with the model of equations that have been developed by the previous researchers. The incoming air velocity 2 m/s is obtained by the output temperature on average for the results experiment with 27.1 o C and for theoretical results of 26.5 o C with an average air temperature of 32.1 o C. As for the incoming air velocity 3 m/s, the resulting output temperature averages for the experimental results of 27.3 o C and for theoretical results of 26.9 o C with an average air temperature that is 33.8 o C. The higher the air intake velocity, the higher the output temperature in the Air-Earth heat exchanger. At 2 m/s air velocity, the output temperature is 27.1 o C and then rises to 27.3 o C at air velocity enter 3 m/s. The effectiveness of the earth heat exchanger at the incoming air velocity 2 m/s for the experimental results was 0.84 while the theoretical calculation was 0.97. From the results of multiple regression analysis, it is found that the NTU and inlet air temperature values have a very strong relationship to the COP value. The correlation coefficient is 0.916 at a speed of 2 m/s and 0.959 at a speed of 3 m/s. The results show great potential for the development of ground-air heat exchangers as a passive cooling system building solution.

The achievement of sustainable energy goals warrants keen interest in promoting efficient buildings and renewable energy resources. Prominent among the energy-efficient building technologies is geothermal energy, which has a significant margin for improving energy utilization related to Heat, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). However, the efficient extraction of geothermal energy for HVAC applications requires stringent control of geometric parameters, boundary conditions, and environmental conditions. In this study a new approach has been devised to optimize the open loop Earth to Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) system using a statistical optimization technique i.e., Response Surface Method (RSM). The study was conducted in the soil and weather conditions of Peshawar city in Pakistan. Parametric analysis was conducted for the three influencing variables, i.e., the pipe length, diameter, and air velocity using the EAHE model. The soil model predicts temperature in the range 20–26 °C for Peshawar at a depth above 3 m. Response Surface method was used to optimize the pipe length, diameter, and air velocity of the EAHE system. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicates that all the three factors are significant. The EAHE system can effectively reduce the temperature by 15–18 °C and compensate the cooling load of single room for the parameters in the ranges of 50–70 m for the length, 0.18–0.25 m for the diameter, and 5–7 ms−1 for the air velocity. A regression equation is developed to predict the cooling load for any input values of the three influencing variables according to the weather and soil conditions.

The Effect of Groundwater Flow on the Thermal Performance of a Novel Borehole Heat Exchanger for Ground Source Heat Pump Systems: Small Scale Experiments and Numerical Simulation

New small-scale experiments are carried out to study the effect of groundwater flow on the thermal performance of water ground heat exchangers for ground source heat pump systems. Four heat exchanger configurations are investigated; single U-tube with circular cross-section (SUC), single U-tube with an oval cross-section (SUO), single U-tube with circular cross-section and single spacer with circular cross-section (SUC + SSC) and single U-tube with an oval cross-section and single spacer with circular cross-section (SUO + SSC). The soil temperature distributions along the horizontal and vertical axis are measured and recorded simultaneously with measuring the electrical energy injected into the fluid, and the borehole wall temperature is measured as well; consequently, the borehole thermal resistance (Rb) is calculated. Moreover, two dimensional and steady-state CFD simulations are validated against the experimental measurements at the groundwater velocity of 1000 m/year with an average error of 3%. Under saturated conditions without groundwater flow effect; using a spacer with SUC decreases the Rb by 13% from 0.15 m·K/W to 0.13 m·K/W, also using a spacer with the SUO decreases the Rb by 9% from 0.11 m·K/W to 0.1 m·K/W. In addition, the oval cross-section with spacer SUO + SSC decreases the Rb by 33% compared with SUC. Under the effect of groundwater flow of 1000 m/year; Rb of the SUC, SUO, SUC + SSC and SUO + SSC cases decrease by 15.5%, 12.3%, 6.1% and 4%, respectively, compared with the saturated condition.
