Early Weight Recidivism Following Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract: In the small group of patients who regained weight, a longer distance between the pylorus and the beginning of the staple line, as well as a higher RGV on GCTV 2 years after LSG, were both associated with increased weight regain. Gastric computed tomography volumetry with RGV measurement holds promise as a useful research tool after LSG.

“…The more bariatric surgeries performed, the higher the number of subjects who will not attain their targeted weight regardless of the treatment used [12]. Weight regain (WR) after bariatric surgery has the ability to impair health outcomes by resurfacing obesity-related comorbidities, reducing the quality of life, and increasing healthcare costs [13].…”

“…Weight regain occurred in 61 (87.1%) patients of our series, however, the average of the regained kilograms was only 8 kg, after an average postoperative period of 2 years. Fahmy et al [ 19 ] studied this mechanism and concluded that the gained kilograms are positively correlated with the distance between the pylorus and the start of the staple line. We applied the same technique to all patients and we started with the staple line approximately 4 cm from the pylorus.…”

“…As an early indicator of weight recidivism, resected gastric specimen measurements may be a helpful tool. Fahmy MHA et al proposed gastric computerized tomography volumetry (GCTV) for residual gastric volume measurement for the early detection of weight recidivism (4,15). However, they could only recognize weight recidivism as early as one and half -2 years.…”
