Early-Stage Dynamics of Light-Matter Interaction Leading to the Insulator-to-Metal Transition in a Charge Ordered Organic Crystal

Abstract: Ultrafast dynamics of the light-matter interaction in a charge-ordered molecular insulator α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 were studied by pump-probe spectroscopy using few-optical-cycle infrared pulses (pulse width 12 fs). Coherent oscillation of the correlated electrons and subsequent Fano destructive interference with intramolecular vibration were observed in time domain; the results indicated a crucial role for electron-electron interplay in the light-matter interaction leading to the photoinduced insulator-to-metal trans… Show more

“…4b shows a dip at B0.15 eV (which equals the vibration peak of the optical conductivity at 140 K (refs 29,30) in the inset) reflecting the destructive interference between charge motion and vibration 33 . Therefore, the intense 20 fs oscillation detected before the appearance of the charge-vibration interference dip is attributed to the oscillation of the CO gap.…”

“…Recent results of the pump-probe experiment using three-optical cycle (12 fs) IR pulses shows that the initial process occurs in the timescale of ca. 15 fs [38], as shown in Section 3.5. Such an ultrafast response indicates that the molecular rearrangement or structural change is unimportant and that electronic processes play a main role because the initial response is as fast as the timescale of the intermolecular CT (ca.…”
