Objetive: provide a scalable environment to represent the concepts of the basic profile of the ISO / IEC 29110 standard for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and their relationships. Methodology: In this paper we propose a novel approach for generating an ontology related to the ISO/IEC 29110 basic profile. We follow some steps: (i) modeling the domain by using executable pre-conceptual schemas; (ii) creating equivalences between pre-conceptual schemas and ontology elements; (iii) translating such equivalences into Protégé, an ontology-based environment; and (iv) creating rules for inferring knowledge from the ontology in order to overcome the aforementioned problems. Results: We create an ontology related to concepts of the ISO/IEC 29110 and their relations in its basic profile. We also answer questions in order to ease the implementation process of the ISO/IEC 29110 basic profile. Conclusions: The resulting ontology serves as support for VSEs and academics when implementing or teaching the basic profile of the ISO/IEC 29110.

Very Small Entities (VSE) delivers a substantial percentage of the world's product and services. These agile and innovative companies approach their market in a flexible, informal, and human‐centered approach. Their transformation from startup phase to an established company can be problematic. As they grow, the VSE must put more emphasis on incorporating formal organizational structure and processes to cope with the increased size and complexity. Failure in adapting often results in a negative market effect. Systems Design Thinking (SDT) is a combination of Systems Engineering, Systems Thinking, and Design Thinking. There is an increased awareness that the perspectives of SDT bring value to organizations. However, the advantage of SDT is not well understood for VSEs that are in the maturing phase. In this work, the researchers explore the value of SDT for very small enterprises transitioning from infancy to adolescence. The article presents a new method for idea development based on SDT principles and tailored to the needs of a VSE. Case‐based research is applied in a small company to understand the needs and verify the desirability, feasibility, and viability of our proposed method. The results suggest that an SDT approach improves the company's ability to capture and develop ideas and can help grow the company.

Nowadays, security and safety aspects are two of the major concerns for any software system development, especially while developing safety critical systems. This is especially relevant for very small entities because they have a limited amount of resources for dealing with all these aspects at the same time. In addition, these systems are highly regulated domains, and they involve a huge set of standards focused on safety and security‐related issues. Therefore, these small entities are not only facing hurdles related to technical aspects but also from the so‐called technical debt when overarching a critical development. This paper extends the assurance cases approach by integrating security aspects within the life cycle, and it proposes a framework for managing the associated security technical debt for very small entities. A tool chain is outlined, and the approach is illustrated with an industrial use case.
