Early Season Herbicide Applications for Weed Control in Stale Seedbed Soybean (Glycine max)

Abstract: Field experiments were conducted in 1989 and 1990 on silty clay and sandy loam soils to evaluate weed control and soybean yield with early-April preplant incorporation of selective herbicides in stale seedbed soybean followed by non-selective weed control measures at planting. Metribuzin applied PPI early followed by chlorimuron POST coupled with either glyphosate or paraquat PRE controlled sicklepod, pitted morningglory, and hemp sesbania to the same extent of that treatment applied PPI at planting. All stale… Show more

“…Time of seedbed tillage after harvest is of little consequence, provided it does not delay planting (16). Weed control options following the application of a preplant foliar-applied (PFA) 4 herbicide to kill weeds just prior to or at planting are varied, but similar seed yield has been achieved from the use of certain selec tive PRE and/or POST herbicides (4,5,17).…”

“…1993. Volume 7:960-965 vvhich must be controlled chemically to facilitate crop stand establishment (1,2,3,8,14,15). One weed management option is to apply a soil residual herbicide at the time of initial seedbed preparation to decrease weed infestation level at planting (11).…”

“…Paraquat and glyphosate, which are presently registered for non selective weed control, can be applied alone or in combination with herbicides having both foliar and soil residual activity. Such tank mixtures could increase ini tial weed control and provide residual weed control, broaden the spectrum of control, and reduce the number of trips over the field (1,2,3).…”

“…Chemical weed control is used prior to planting in stale seedbeds (Noll, 1978;Whatley et al, 1984;Bruff & Shaw 1992;Heatherly et al, 1992). By these definitions autumn-prepared seedbeds are stale by spring.…”
