Introduction/Objective Breast cancer surgery is associated with the risk of developing functional constraints that may negatively affect the quality of patients' lives. The objective of the study was to determine the impact of early postoperative exercises three months after surgery on functional recovery and the quality of life of patients who were operated on. Methods A group of 149 patients was tested, divided by the type of surgery into two groups. The assessment of the quality of life by the SF-36 questionnaire and functional testing were done three months after surgery; the extent of movement in the shoulder joint and of the limbs was measured as well. Results On basic measurements of the quality of life, the average results of SF-36 showed the highest values in the domain of physical functioning, while the lowest value was in the vitality and energy domain. After the realized rehabilitation activities, the results of the SF-36 questionnaire indicated the increase in all domains and components at the significance level of p = 0.001, except for the general health domain (p = 0.04). Preoperatively, a moderate negative association of mobility and the SF-36 questionnaire component with the overall health parameter was determined, whereby the lower value of the SF-36 questionnaire was followed by a larger deviation in the flexion movements and abduction of the shoulder joint. Conclusion The results of our study support the concept of early-initiated rehabilitation interventions and confirm the positive impact on the quality of life of patients operated on for breast cancer in the three-month follow-up period.

Background/Aim. Secondary lymphedema of the arm is one of possible side-effects and complications of breast cancer and its treatment which can contribute and precipitate to a number of new psychosocial problems. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in quality of life of patients suffering from breast cancer, with arm lymphedema and those without lymphedema, and to determine the significance of the perception of the disease, depressive symptoms and self-efficacy contribution to overall quality of life. Methods. The research was designed as a cross-sectional study, which included 64 patients-34 with arm lymphedema and 30 without lymphedema. Questionnaire FACT-B + 4 was applied to assess the quality of life, BIPQ for the perception of the disease, depression was measured by DASS-21 scale, while self-efficacy was tested by SGSE scale. T-test, Mann Whitney U Test, χ 2 test and hierarchical regression analysis were applied to data processing. Results. There was not any significant difference between the groups in the total score of quality of life (t = 0.469, p > 0.05), or in the individual subscales: physical well-being (t = 0.535, p > 0.05), social/family well-being (t = 1.43, p > 0.05), emotional well-being (t = 1.35, p > 0.05), functional well-being (z =-0.243, p > 0.05), breast cancer scale (t =-0.839, p > 0.05) and arm scale (t =-0.514, p >0.05), while the perception of the disease (β =-0.603, t =-5.958, p < 0.001) and depression (β =-0.411, t =-4.101, p < 0.001) proved to be significant predictors of quality of life and explain 50.2% variance of overall quality of life. Conclusion. The results of our study indicate the importance of a comprehensive rehabilitation program, directed both at functional and psychosocial aspects.

Background Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a potentially disabling and often irreversible consequence of breast cancer treatment, caused by the mechanical incompetence of the lymphatic system, resulting in reduced drainage capacity and functional overload due to an excessive volume of interstitial fluid surpassing the system’s transport capacity in the arm. We wanted to determine the impact and explore the differences in independent risk factors for the occurrence of BCRL; incidence of BCRL over a five-year period at the Institute of Oncology Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica and to answer the research question regarding the influence of the prehabilitation program on the overall incidence of BCRL during the observed five-year period. Methods From 2014 to 2018, a retrospective study was conducted at the Institute of Oncology of Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica, analyzing female patients who had undergone breast cancer surgery. Results The study included 150 breast cancer patients who developed secondary lymphedema following surgery with the mean age of 59.2 ± 11.3 years. Fluctuations in hospitalization rates were observed over the five-year period, with the highest number of admissions in 2014 (24.0%) and a decline in 2018 (14.0%). The most common surgical procedure performed was left quadrantectomy (24.0%), followed by right quadrantectomy (20.0%) and left amputation (15.3%). The mean number of removed lymph nodes was 15.2 ± 6.1, with no statistically significant association between the number of removed lymph nodes and the manifestation of secondary lymphedema. The severity of secondary lymphedema varied based on patient age, with a higher incidence of moderate and severe lymphedema observed in patients aged 61 years and older. Patients who underwent radical surgery were more likely to experience severe lymphedema compared to those who had conservative surgery, although this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion In our study, the type of surgery, elapsed time since surgery, and the number of removed lymph nodes were not influencing factors for the occurrence of BCRL. However, concerning its severity, a greater number of systemic therapy modalities combined with radiotherapy were associated with a more frequent occurrence of mild and moderate BCRL. Also, the severity of BCRL varied among different age groups, with a higher incidence of moderate and severe lymphedema observed in patients aged 61 years and older. Ultimately, improving the quality of life for individuals affected by secondary lymphedema remains a crucial goal in the field of oncology.
