Early radiographic osteoarthritis is associated with substantial changes in cartilage volume and tibial bone surface area in both males and females11Sources of support: National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, Masonic Centenary Medical Research Foundation.

Abstract: Early medial compartment ROA is associated with substantial reductions in cartilage volume and increases in bone area. These large changes, when combined with similar measurement error for MRI and radiographs, suggest that MRI may be superior at detecting and hence understanding early osteoarthritis of the knee in humans.

“…This situation can be easily monitored, however, and VC brought in at a later point to prove this case. It should be noted that the opposite case, where significant changes in tAB and ThCcAB.Me cause VC to show minimal change, may also be true and even more likely, because significant increases in tAB with aging have recently been reported in longitudinal studies (4,(29)(30)(31)(32).…”

“…When the first radiological changes on OA are detected, 13% of knee cartilage has already been lost (45). That loss of cartilage correlates with the worsening of symptoms and predicts knee replacement (46).…”

“…This study was performed as part of the Tasmanian Older Adult Cohort (TASOAC) study, a population-based study that was designed to identify the genetic, environmental, and biochemical factors associated with the development and progression of OA at multiple sites. Subjects between 50 and 80 years old were randomly selected from the electoral roll in Southern Tasmania (population 229, as previously described (17,18).…”

“…Knee bone size measurement. Knee tibial plateau bone areas were measured using the software program Osiris as previously described (18). Medial and lateral tibial plateau bone areas were uniform in nature and can be measured directly from the reformatted axial images.…”
