Industry 4, the Internet of Things, and large‐scale system‐to‐system interactions are driving digital transformation in the industry. Model‐based systems engineering (MBSE) is one of the core paradigms behind this transformation. MBSE practices are widely applied to enterprise (including system of systems and mission) architectures, which become a crucial part of successful digital transformation. The core challenge today is not only how digital continuity can be maintained by connecting different layers of models (such as system models to system‐of‐systems models), but also how to perform detailed analysis and simulation at the enterprise level model. This paper studies Systems Modeling Language (SysML) as the standard language to model systems, Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) as the framework, Unified Architecture Framework Modeling Language (UAFML) as the language to model enterprise architectures, and proposes an approach for end‐to‐end co‐execution of the integrated enterprise model.

In this paper, we propose an extension to the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) Profile to leverage the potential of the widely used SWOT analysis in modeling the UAF strategic viewpoint of an enterprise or System of Systems (SoS). This novel methodology assists with capturing the capabilities an enterprise needs to achieve its goals through the SWOT analysis. Capabilities are key elements in the UAF Strategic viewpoint. Previous works for identifying capabilities only showcase the resulting strategic views without interpreting their ties to the UAF strategic elements. The absence of a common methodology for incorporating strategic planning into the UAF is a potential deterrent for enterprises to accept the UAF. To address this gap, we propose using the SWOT analysis as an established method of strategic planning that has been used for many years in various enterprises. The four SWOT elements, i.e., Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat, are comparable to the UAF strategic elements Challenge and Opportunity which are the basis for capturing the enterprise capabilities. We extend the UAF profile to enable SWOT elements in the UAF and provide dependency relationships to illustrate traceability between SWOT elements and capabilities. This paper provides two key contributions. First, this work extends the UAF Profile to identify capabilities from SWOT analysis which takes both internal and external conditions of the enterprise into account. Second, we develop the methodology to create the necessary views which trace the SWOT elements to the stakeholders and capabilities. The proposed method is one that enterprises and SoS managers can employ to adopt UAF with minimal to no disruption to their current business processes. We also demonstrate a seamless integration of the SWOT analysis into the UAF. Finally, we use an illustrative example of a hypothetical enterprise to demonstrate the new SWOT diagrams enabled through the proposed extension.

Trade studies have become an indispensable engineering activity and are used often in the early stage of system architecture development. Trade studies not only help when choosing the most balanced alternative, but are also essential in highlighting the most influential aspects of the system. Trade studies in highly sophisticated systems are often very complex. Therefore, given these complexities, we proposed a new trade study process for the system of systems architecture developed in Unified Architecture Framework models. This process supports automated methods that allow for greater accuracy, better uncertainty analysis, and accelerated analysis of alternatives. One of the essential and challenging stages of the proposed trade study process is a thorough evaluation of plausible alternatives, referred to as the Deep Check. The goal of this stage is to identify the most balanced alternative by evaluating those that are plausible against established evaluation criteria. This paper introduces a new approach to evaluate the system of systems architectures within a trade study process using automated methods in a model-based system engineering environment. We verified the proposed method by running an experiment on a real-world model to confirm its eligibility.INDEX TERMS Architecture evaluation, sensitivity analysis, system of systems architecture, trade study, unified architecture framework (UAF).
