“…This area has been named the Fowler Orogenic Belt (Daly et al 1998) and is considered cogenetic with the Karari Fault Zone. A deformed high-grade metamafic rock from the Fowler Orogenic Belt contains metamorphic zircons dated at 1543• by SHRIMP U-Pb techniques (Fanning 1997), and structures in the drill core from the Karari Fault Zone (Rankin et al 1989) and rare outcrop in the Fowler Orogenic Belt are consistent with sinistral transpression and east-side-up dip-slip movement.…”

“…This magnetic response is not consistent with that expected from mafic rocks. The northeast‐trending, highly magnetic, Karari Fault Zone lies in the northwest portion of this domain (Figure 2) (Rankin et al . 1989; Fraser et al .…”

“…Given the pressure estimates discussed above, thrusting was responsible for at least *3 kbar or *10 km of vertical offset, exhuming the terranes north of the Karari Shear Zone (Figure 8). Fraser & Lyons (2006) Map patterns in regional magnetic images, and previous field observations ( Rankin et al 1989;Betts & Giles 2002;Direen et al 2005;Swain et al 2005a;Stewart & Betts 2010) have been interpreted to infer significant sinistral strike-slip motion across the Karari Shear Zone. Although some of this strike-slip motion may have occurred in concert with thrust motion in the interval ca 1580 to 1550 Ma, a distinct subsequent episode of strike-slip shearing is interpreted to have occurred at ca 1450-1440 Ma, based on the consistency of 40 Ar/ 39 Ar mica ages from hydrous shear fabrics within the Karari Shear Zone, and that these ages post-date 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages from both south and north of the shear zone (Fraser & Lyons 2006;this study).…”

“…Sample locations and drill holes from which samples were taken are shown on Figure 2 and in Tables The drill-hole Ooldea DDH3 was located directly over the magnetic trace of the Karari Shear Zone and rocks from this drill-hole represent the only available samples from within the shear zone (Rankin et al 1989), which is not exposed anywhere along its length. Sample 2007371003a is a strongly mylonitic garnet-quartz-plagioclase-K-feldspar-magnetite gneiss.…”
