Early ovarian ageing: a hypothesis: Detection and clinical relevance

Abstract: An important scientific breakthrough of the 20th century, IVF helped open new horizons in medicine, such as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and embryonic stem-cell therapy. A further contribution of assisted reproduction technology has been the better understanding of reproductive ageing. Data from IVF cycles suggest that there is a fixed time-interval between accelerated decline of fertility and the menopause. This leads to the hypothesis that a significant proportion of asymptomatic women in the early thi… Show more

“…In this regard, it is believed that the time passing between the detection of the first signs of reproductive aging and the menopause transition is fixed (van Zonneveld et al 2001, te Velde & Pearson 2002. Thus, ovarian response to hormonal treatments has been proposed as a dynamic test of reproductive aging in women (Nikolaou & Templeton 2003). …”

“…1 000 follikler som forsvinner hver måned (12). Det er vist at alder ved menopause er avhengig av det totale antallet follikler i ovariene og hvor raskt antallet reduseres (13). Kjente risikofaktorer for redusert ovarial reserve, i tillegg til genetiske faktorer, er røy-king, kirurgiske inngrep som affiserer eggstokkene, bekkeninfeksjon, endometriose, kjemoterapi og stråleterapi (13).…”

“…Despite an earlier age of menopause, most affected patients will not meet the definition for POI, yet some may become menopausal before the age of 45 years old. POI affects 1 % of women, whereas DOR affects a much larger portion of the infertile population [9][10][11][15][16][17][18].…”
