Early orthodontic treatment reduced incisal trauma in children with class II malocclusions

Abstract: The evidence suggests that providing early orthodontic treatment for children with prominent upper front teeth is more effective in reducing the incidence of incisal trauma than providing one course of orthodontic treatment when the child is in early adolescence. There appear to be no other advantages for providing treatment early when compared to treatment in adolescence.

“…This type of malocclusion, especially when upper incisors are protruded, is likely to produce several consequences. Among these complications, for instance, there are significant esthetic [5] and social [6] impact on children, as well as on their dental health [7]; or it might even predispose them to upper front teeth trauma [8,9], or to upper airway complications, in severe cases [10].…”

“…7 Plenty of evidence is available to support that Class II, division 1 individuals have smaller transverse maxillary dental or skeletal dimensions. [8][9][10][11] For this reason, it has been proposed that the treatment of this malocclusion should comprise previous maxillary expansion.…”
