European perch, Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus, 1758 and roach, Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus, 1758) are the most common species present in mesotrophic and eutrophic lakes throughout Europe. Their biomass, especially in juvenile stages, contributes the most to the fish production of these ecosystems. In Bovan Reservoir, these two species constitute the bulk of the juvenile fish biomass. This study aimed to investigate the feeding composition of these two species in order to evaluate their niche overlap due to the availability of resources during different seasons. Traditional diet analysis indices and Kohonen artificial neural network (i.e., a self-organizing map, SOM) were used to investigate the diet of 158 individuals of both species and evaluate their food niche overlap. The indicator value (IndVal) was applied to identify indicator food categories based on which the contents of their alimentary tracts were grouped first into neurons and then into clusters on the SOM. Our results showed that juvenile fish used zooplankton and benthic prey in their diet. Roach often fed on nonanimal prey, while perch of age 0+ used fishes in the diet. Additionally, four clusters of neurons were isolated on the SOM output network. The distribution of perch and roach alimentary tracts in neurons indicated no high degree of competition between them. While diet analyses indices show which food category is generally important in specimensʼ diet, the SOM recognizes those specimens and arranges them together into the same or adjacent neurons based on dominant prey. Understanding fish feeding habits is critical for the development of conservation and management plans. Since Bovan is a eutrophic reservoir, our knowledge of fish feeding habits needs to be considered for stocking strategies in the future.

– Larvae and juveniles of perch Perca fluviatilis and bream Abramis brama of Lake Speldrop, a highly eutrophicated gravel‐pit lake in the floodplain of the Lower Rhine, were used in laboratory experiments to study predation of perch on bream. In the first series of experiments (control), 0+ perch of 30 mm total length (TL) did not prey on 0+ roach of about 24 mm TL. The perch fed only on zooplankton, resulting in low growth rates of 0.17 mm · day−1. In the second series of experiments, perch (30 mm TL) were combined with 0+ bream with an average TL of 14 and 19 mm at different ratios. As in the first series, even a nine‐fold higher amount of zooplankton food had no significant influence on the growth rate of perch, regardless of the perch:bream ratio. At a perch: bream ratio of 7:1 and 4:4 all bream were eaten by the perch and restocked twice daily. At the end of the experiment, the TL of perch at a perch:bream ratio of 7:1 was significantly lower compared to a perch:bream ratio of 4:4 (mean growth rates at 7:1 of 0.16 mm · day−1 and at 4:4 of 0.35 mm · day−1). At the perch:bream ratio of 1:7, perch fed on bream in varying amounts, averaging between 3 and 12 bream per day and per individual. After 20 days, the final length of these fish was always significantly higher than the TL of perch at other perch:bream ratios and increased in correlation to number of bream eaten per day (mean growth rate 1.13 mm · day−1). The results are discussed with respect to the piscivore‐dominated fish community of the eutrophied Lake Speldrop.Note

Empirical models were established, which link the biomasses or productions of the successive planktonic trophic levels in lakes of different depth and trophic status. Published data on 56 lakes were analysed, using both least-square and reduced-major-axis regressions. Reduced-major-axes regression technique was used in order to take into account variability due to both bottom-up and top-down forces. In shallow lakes, the energy transfer efficiency between phytoplankton and zooplankton decreases with increasing trophy. An inverse tendency appears in deep lakes. However, when considering only the oligo-and mesotrophic temperate lakes, the mean primary and secondary productivities per unit of area are about the same in shallow and in deep sites. On the other hand, shallow water bodies are characterized by a smaller mean size of the crustacean species, a lower mean biomass of zooplankton and a higher P zoo /B zoo ratio than deep lakes, probably as a response to the prédation by fish. While the consumers seem to have a strong influence on the size structure and biomass of plankton, the energy flows between the trophic levels could be largely controlled by bottom-up forces. Des données de la littérature, concernant 56 de lacs de profondeurs et de statuts trophiques variés, ont été collectées et analysées à l'aide de modèles de régression linéaires établis selon les techniques des moindres carrés et de l'axe majeur réduit. Cette dernière technique a été utilisée afin de tenir compte simultané-ment des forces de contrôle ascendantes et descendantes au sein des réseaux trophiques. Dans les lacs peu profonds, l'efficacité des transferts énergétiques entre le phytoplancton et le zooplancton diminue avec le statut trophique des lacs. Une tendance inverse caractérise les lacs profonds. Cependant, les transferts énergétiques semblent s'effectuer avec une efficacité similaire lorsqu'on ne prend pas en compte les lacs ultra-oligotrophes. Par ailleurs, les lacs peu profonds sont caractérisés par des microcrustacés planctoniques de plus petite taille, une plus faible biomasse zooplanctonique et un rapport P^o/B^ inférieur par rapport à ce que l'on observe dans les lacs profonds, probablement du fait d'une plus forte pression de prédation par les poissons. Alors que les prédateurs semblent jouer un rôle important dans le contrôle de la structure en taille et de la biomasse du plancton, les flux d'énergie entre niveaux trophiques successifs semblent essentiellement contrôlés par les ressources.
