Early life environmental predictors of asthma age‐of‐onset

Abstract: Prevention strategies that delay the onset of asthma may improve clinical outcomes. To identify early life environmental exposures associated with asthma age-of-onset and potential genetic modifiers of these exposures, we studied 1085 subjects with physician-diagnosed asthma and disease onset at or after age two. Subjects reported retrospectively on their exposure to 17 environmental factors before the age of two. The presence of individual or combinations of these early life exposures was then tested for asso… Show more

“…An association between carpets and early onset asthma was also observed in the study by Ferry and coworkers [ 30 ] where they looked to identify environmental exposures associated with early onset of asthma and potential hereditary impact. More than 1000 individuals with physician diagnosed asthma and disease onset by two years or older were studied.…”

“…The majority of studies appear to find correlation between carpet floors and adverse health outcomes such as respiratory infections, asthma worsening and age at asthma onset [ 27 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 34 ]. Carpets in the children’s bedroom have also been associated with increased risk of asthma [ 31 , 33 ] However, the current knowledge is insufficient to quantify the risk for these outcomes.…”

“…In childhood, candidate environmental-risk factors that might affect age of onset include the timing, frequency, and duration of chest infections, allergen exposure, pet ownership, maternal smoking, and low-quality diet during pregnancy. [47][48][49][50][51][52][53] In adulthood, additional risk factors might include occupational exposures, active smoking, and obesity. 20,22,[54][55][56] To identify genetic risk factors that could be specific to COA or AOA, we performed two GWASs in the UK Biobank study.…”
