Early intervention evidence for infants with or at risk for cerebral palsy: an overview of systematic reviews

Abstract: Aim To perform an overview of systematic reviews and more recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on early motor interventions in infants aged 0 to 3 years with or at risk of cerebral palsy to inform current clinical and research efforts and provide a benchmark to assess future interventions ideally initiated within the first 6 months. Method Standardized searches of the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were conducted for systematic reviews (2009–2020) and RCTs (2015–2020). Results From … Show more

“…Caregivers are usually alone in their journey to discover what CP entails, mainly due to the lack of specialized centres in paediatric rehabilitation in Turkey and the lack of structured referral networks that would refer these caregivers to these centres, as stated previously. Today, it is a well‐known fact that early intervention programmes are crucial for patients' treatment success, and these programmes can also help the caregivers in adjusting their perspectives about CP (Damiano & Longo, 2021), but after the initial shock, an adaptation process occurs helping the parents come to terms with the diagnosis. Although this process increases the amount of stress caregivers endure, it is positively affected by the self‐esteem, self‐mastery, positive attitude and support from professional services, which makes informing the caregivers crucial in these early stages (Rentinck et al, 2007).…”

“…Three systematic reviews have investigated the efficacy of early motor intervention for infants and toddlers with or at high risk of CP younger than 3 years. [8][9][10] One review included infants younger than 12 months, 9 1 included children younger than 2 years, 10 and 1 included children younger than 3 years. 8 The reviews have 3 limitations.…”

“…It conducted workshops in member academy meetings in priority areas, and initiated networking support for professionals around the world as children’s services were being impacted by the COVID‐19 pandemic. As one example of strategic efforts to partner with other major global organizations, the Best Practice Committee collaborated with the World Health Organization’s Rehabilitation 2030 initiative in the development of a global Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation in cerebral palsy that is now under review by external experts 2,3 . Existing practice guidelines have largely been established within HICs, and member academies are keen to adapt, translate, and disseminate these for implementation in each unique context.…”
