Early infection with Histomonas meleagridis has limited effects on broiler breeder hens' growth and egg production and quality

Abstract: A study was conducted to determine differences between Histomonas meleagridis –infected and control pullets based on disease signs, hen growth, and egg production and quality. Ross 708SF females were weighed and then placed in pens on the day of hatch (92 chicks/pen). At 25 D, 4 pens were infected with H. meleagridis in the cloaca, whereas 4 pens were control. At 5, 10, and 20 D after inoculation, 5 birds per pen (2 birds per pen at 20 D) were subjectively scored f… Show more

“…Egg-type chickens (ISA brown) may not show lesions typical of histomoniasis ( Esquenet et al, 2003 ), and Powell et al (2009) reported livers analyzed for H. meleagridis mRNA were all negative in broilers at 10 days post-challenge. Liebhart et al (2011) and Chadwick et al (2020) noted that histomoniasis in chickens was not as severe as in turkeys, based on the lower frequency of cecal lesions and mortality. Additionally, Chadwick et al (2020) suspected that young breeder chickens may actually clear the Histomonas infection by 10 days post-challenge, as indicated by low to no cecal lesions, and very few if any hepatic lesions.…”

Since H. meleagridis is an extracellular pathogen, it was not surprising that in six of the seven line comparisons, where there were no interactions, the expression was greater in LAS than that in HAS.…”

“…Conversely, turkeys co-infected with E. adenoeides and H. meleagridis resulted in significantly reduced cases of histomonosis (24). The dosage and timing of Eimeria vaccination of chickens will influence the severity of aggravation due to histomonosis, although further co-infection studies are necessary to conclude effects of combined pathogens to severity in chickens and turkeys (80).…”
