The high est level of the Litorina Sea shore line near Káivasoo is at 27.6 m a.s.l., and it oc curred dur ing the Ini tial Litorina Sea. Within the Litorina Sea trans gres sion, 7800 cal yr BP, rel a tive sea level reached 24.9 m a.s.l. at Káivasoo, 24.1 m a.s.l. at Loopsoo, 23.6 m a.s.l. at Tihu, and 21.5 m a.s.l. at Prassi. Káivasoo be came iso lated from the sea about 8500 cal yr BP, Loopsoo between 7100 and 6800 cal yr BP, Tihu around 4800 cal yr BP, and Prassi about 2500 cal yr BP. Pres ently gained data from Hiiumaa Is land con firm that the Litorina Sea re gressed con sis tently dur ing the last 8000 years due to pro gres sively de clin ing iso static re bound. The pres ent study is also il lus trated by 3-di men sional palaeogeographic maps of the Hiiumaa Is land devel op ment.

Two sediment cores have been obtained from the southern and eastern parts of the Gdansk Basin for lithological, geochemical and diatom analysis. The data revealed provides information about environmental changes during the transition of the Ancylus Lake to the Litorina Sea stages. The Ancylus Lake transgression and regression phases have been well traced in the diatom flora of the shallower, eastern slope of the Gdansk Depression, whereas mentioned water level changes have not been detected in the deepwater (southern) part of the basin. The Litorina Sea has been clearly defined according to geochemical, lithological and diatom analysis. The Initial Litorina Sea transition was observed as gradually increasing numbers of brackish water diatoms and higher contents of C org and N in the sediments, when saline water influx reached the basin before 7600±184 cal. yr BP.

Four sediment cores from the southern part of the Arkona Basin were analyzed in terms of their geochemical composition, age and stratigraphy. The main stages of the Baltic Sea: the Baltic Ice Lake, the Ancylus Lake and the Littorina Sea were identified in all the analyzed cores. The data confirmed the high water fluctuation and significant environmental changes during the Baltic Sea evolution in the Late-Glacial and the Holocene. The signs of the second regression of the Baltic Ice Lake, dated at around 11 000 cal BP, were identified at a depth of 24 m b.s.l. Regression of the Ancylus Lake, dated at 9300 cal BP, was identified at a depth of 23 m b.s.l. The most pronounced period was the transition stage between the Ancylus Lake and the Littorina Sea. The record of the Littorina Sea onset in the sediments of the Arkona Basin is marked as a sudden increase in loss on ignition, biogenic silica, magnesium, calcium, iron and strontium. The age of the Littorina Sea in the Arkona Basin was estimated as younger than 8200 cal BP.
