Early History of Adsorption Measurements

Abstract: This historical survey covers the initial investigations of adsorption measurements of the geometric microstructure of solid surfaces. Methods investigated are sorptometry, hygrometry, calorimetry, thermogravimetry and thermoporometry. The histories of these methods are short, beginning in modern times; only hygrometry can be traced back to ancient times.

“…As características da adsorção de materiais porosos eram conhecidas desde os tempos antigos, no entanto, as medições foram puramente baseadas em observações e práticas ou em comparação de propriedades dos materiais avaliados. Os romanos por exemplo realizaram várias investigações desde a idade média, muitos relatórios sobre os experimentos científicos serviram como base para técnicas mais desenvolvidas (ROBENS e JAYAWEERA, 2014).…”

“…In 1550 Egyptians used adsorption process for removal of unwanted compound, they adsorbed odorous from wounds and intestines by using charcoal as an adsorbent. The same charcoal was used by Phoenicians to purify water in 460 BC [103,104]. In 1912 Chapman and Siebold published very first article for separation of dye molecules from water by using adsorption process [105].…”

“…The first attempts for using adsorption process for removal of an unwanted compound was started in 1550 BC by Egyptians who used charcoal to adsorb odorous vapors from wounds and intestine. Phoenicians observed the application of charcoals filters in 460 BC purify water [12,23]. The first article about the removal of dyes by adsorption process was published by Chapman and Siebold in 1912.…”
