Early Emergence of Rumination has no Association with Performance on a Non-affective Inhibitory Control Task

Abstract: Rumination is a vulnerability for depression and potentially linked to inhibitory control weaknesses. We aimed to replicate the association observed in adults between inhibitory control and rumination in adolescents, and to examine putative moderating roles of childhood maltreatment and perceived family cohesion in an adolescent sample at risk for depression due to familial/personal history. Ninety adolescents aged 11–17 ( M = 14.6, SD = 1.8) completed self-report … Show more

“…Anhedonia has been attributed to impairments in the reward network (e.g., nucleus accumbens), but also in the cognitive control networks in the prefrontal cortex [6,5]. On the other hand, rumination has been frequently associated with impairment in executive control and cognitive inhibition [7][8][9][10][11]. Moreover, rumination could be a speci c de cit in semantic inhibition processes [12,5] rather than a general executive functions de cit, as it involves di culties to suppress recurrent thoughts.…”
