Early effect of NEURAPAS®balance on current source density (CSD) of human EEG

Abstract: Psychiatric patients often suffer from stress, anxiety and depression. Various plant extracts are known to fight stress (valerian), anxiety (passion flower) or depression (St. John's wort). NEURAPAS® balance is a mixture of these three extracts and has been designed to cover this complex of psychiatric conditions. The study was initiated to quantitatively assess the effect of this combination on brain electric activity.MethodQuantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) current source density (CSD) recording from 16… Show more

“…Therefore, data recorded during the cognitive and emotional challenges are documented by calculating the difference to the relaxed state with open eyes in order to be able to better differentiate specific patterns of the challenges from each other. As observed also in earlier studies using classic analysis of EEG fronto-temporal delta and theta spectral power increases during mental loads like the d2-concentration endurance test, an arithmetic concentration test and a memory test [15]. The present investigation confirms this result and shows that it depends on the type of challenge, how strong these increases of slow waves develop.…”

“…Quantitative EEG measurements have been extensively used in the past to characterize drug action on the brain [10] [17]. Interpretation of the major neurotransmitter activities underlying frequency changes has become possible through preclinical experiments using several selective neurotransmitter agonists and antagonists.…”

“…In comparison to the psychometric tests as already published [17] 3 more tests were presented: Reaction Time Test, Number Identifying Test and Number Connection Test. Result of the reaction time test is given in milliseconds.…”
