“…This approach deserves further attention in larger and multicenter studies, since the interpretation or quantification of light chain restriction by immunohistochemical analysis may often be difficult and subjective, especially in borderline cases. Recently proposed in situ hybridization studies might be more reliable (42). However, we stress the role of a careful clinical approach to the patient.…”

“…Therefore, molecular analyses should not be primarily targeted to such lesions in SS. Other investigators, however, have suggested that the dissemination of an overt malignant lymphoma could be highlighted by the detection of B cell clonality in benign lesions (11,42), although this issue is controversial (42,43). It is possible that less sensitive, nonmolecular analyses, i.e., the study of K / A light chain restriction on minor salivary gland infiltrates in SS, might be of some value to this end.…”

“…More recently, immunohistochemical and molecular studies have shown a high incidence of light-chain restriction in labial minor salivary glands (Bodeutsch et al, 1993;Speight and Jordan, 1993;Speight et al, 1994). In a large study of 70 labial glands from patients with Sjogren's syndrome, light-chain restriction was identified in 13 cases.…”

“…In late complications, 4%-7% of patients with SS develop B-cell lymphomas, among which 48%-75% are extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma), frequently located in the parotid gland. MALT lymphoma affecting the minor salivary glands in SS patients is rare (6,7). It is interesting to note that, although obstructive phenomena by periductal lymphocytic infiltrates can be observed in minor salivary glands from SS patients, reactive lesions, such as oral mucocele, are uncommon (8).…”
